![]() I think the Imprezza wagons are a better value, and better overall package than the P5 (better crash tests, better reliability, better resale value, etc.). Also, if I wanted to give up the cargo capacity of my wagon I'd buy a used SL2 or new ION, not the P5. Those 50 series tires on the P5 would just get me a lot more bent rims and flat tires here in pothole filled Philly. In 1993 the wagons got the same handling package and 60 series touring tires as the SC2 and SL2, and I switched to Dunlop D60/A2s over 80K miles ago, which were even better. I still think I'll stick with my 1st Gen SW2, which handles fine for me. There was/is alot of frustration with Saturn for it. Saturn never really came out with a sporty S series. Even the non turbo model would be decent. The Pro 5 is a good second choice, as well as the Subaru impreza wagon. I wan't to get back into a polymer saturn. I think the ION will be much better than the S series. The interior/seats of the protege are much, much, better. It is a great economy car, that in the "2" models could handle well. It was refined over the years, but that's all. Are really the same set up as the first model year. It never really changed that much to last years model. The S series was designed in the late 80's. It was harsh over some bimps, but felt very connected to the road. (Yes he is one of the maniacs you see weaving in and out going 80 mph) My friend is a leadfoot and was always pulling ahead of traffic on the NJ turnpike. I haven't driven but have been a passenger. The Protege 5 looks good with the sunroof, 16" wheels, and rear discs, but the heavier curb weight probably offsets the slightly larger engine.Ī friend of mine traded in a 95 SL2 for a 01' pro5. The conclusion that I drew is that the SW2 has a larger cargo area and is a lighter car. It probably sticks to the road pretty well I made the switch to Dunlop SP A2s a week ago, and it was worth it My guess is that the car's "fun factor" is based on the available sunroof, front and rear disc brakes, agressive body styling, and 195/50R16 wheels with Dunlop® tires. The Protege has a 2.0L DOHC 16-valve 4 cylinder that produces 130 hp 6000 rpm and 135 lb ft of torque 4000 rpm. Gas mileage with a manual is 25/31 and automatic is 25/30. The Protege 5 has a curb weight of 2716 lbs with a manual, and 2749 lbs with the automatic. The trunk space is smaller in the Protege 5. I never drove one, but here is what I took away from it. 2000, and shortly after, Mazda released the Protege 5. ![]()
